#1- There is a scene where the Baroness is dressed in a corset and the Baron is trying to kill her using booby traps. The children (Adrian Hall and Heather Ripley) are adorable, with old-world charm and innocence. Dick Van Dyke does his predictable yet loveable jigs and playful dances beside his beautiful lady counterpart (Sally Ann Howes). The opening scene was enthralling for my kids to see the crazy and death-defying shenanigans of yesteryear automobile racing. Described as "if Mary Poppins and 007 had a love child it would be Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and at times during the movie you get a sense of that.Īs a child, I watched this several times as a child and wanted my kids to enjoy the whimsical, fantastical automobile adventure. If you're expecting a "Mary Poppins" experience, this isn't it. Themes and character strengths on display include curiosity and perseverance. The film has positive messages about how there's beauty and worth to be found in everyone, and that even failure can be a positive experience if you learn from your mistakes. There's an entire kingdom made up of villainous Germanic stereotypes (elderly snobbish White men) who aren't as menacing as they are bumbling. A woman dances in her old-fashioned lingerie, and two characters kiss. Younger children may find the images scary older kids might understand the intent and could find it funny. Villains include the clownish variety with twirling mustaches, one of whom wields a hook, and a very creepy Child Catcher who uses candy to lure children into cages. There's also exaggerated action: A character in his outhouse-like hideaway gets carried away by a zeppelin, a baroness is shot into the sky (and retrieved by cannon shots letting the air out of her billowing skirt). ![]() ![]() During some scenes, the main characters and others are in jeopardy, and fantasy sequences include comic pratfalls. ![]() Parents need to know that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a classic family adventure film.
